Essential Fatty Acids
The body can synthesize most of the fats it needs from the diet. However, it cannot make essential fatty acids (omega 3 and omega 6) on its own. For optimal health and wellness their intake must be ensured through diet. Not only that, but, as these two essential acids compete for enzyme availability, it is important to consume them in the proper ratio as excessive intake of omega-6 fatty acids can inhibit omega-3s. The correct ratio is not only highly affected by diet and lifestyle, but also by genetic capacity to metabolise these essential fatty acids.
Generally, omega-6 to omega-3 ratio should be between 1:1 and 4:1. However, due to high consumption of processed foods in the Western diet, most people’s actual consumption ratio is between 10:1 and 25:1, which inhibits omega-3’s potential benefits. Omega-3s benefits include atherosclerosis prevention, reduced risk of heart disease and stroke, and relief from the symptoms associated with ulcerative colitis, menstrual pain, and joint pain. Not getting enough of essential fatty acids through diet may lead to liver and kidney problems, dry skin, depression and compromised immune system.
